BrightPlanet Releases DFP Version 3.0 with Management Center

RELEASED:  May 18, 2005

(SIOUX FALLS,SD) -- BrightPlanet Corporation announced today the release of version 3.0 of the Deep Federation Portal™ (DFP) with Management Center. The DFP is an automated Web portal that can harvest from hundreds or thousands of other Web sites and publish that information on a unified, comprehensive portal — all automatically.

"The State of South Dakota has over 40 Web sites supporting all the state agencies and several state college sites. The state government uses a DFP to make all that information available to the citizenry from one comprehensive and easy to use portal: SoDakLive", remarked Duncan Witte, BrightPlanet's president. "Visitors need only go to SoDakLive.com to search for any documents available from any and all state agencies WITHOUT having to know which agency Web site to visit. And as responsibilities and related documents shift from one agency to another, site visitors don't need to know what has changed — they don't need to visit and search individual agency sites — they only need visit SoDakLive to find those documents. It's one-stop shopping for state information!"

Full-life-cycle costs from the new product can be dramatically lower than older solutions largely because portal maintenance is largely automatic. Jerry Tardif, BrightPlanet's VP who managed the rollout of the new release for BrightPlanet, stated, "In the past, maintaining large portals took many librarians. But DFP requires manual intervention only for initial setup and minimal follow-on maintenance. The topic nodes are defined when the portal is initially installed, and harvested documents are automatically placed into the appropriate topic nodes. As new documents become available, subsequent categorizations are run periodically (weekly, monthly, etc.) and the system automatically places new documents into the correct topic node without human intervention. Project maintenance that required a team of librarians in the past is now performed in a few person-days per month by existing staff — the savings can be enormous!"

The new Management Center makes the process of setup, node definition and maintenance easy for any individual responsible for portal operation. Categorization is especially fast because it is performed dynamically as nodes are defined and added. Even a complete categorization doesn't take much time — a portal of over a thousand nodes and 250,000 documents will place documents in just one hour.

The Deep Federation Portal is able to harvest from conventional Web sites, search engines, and Web directories, as well as from the Deep Web. And organizations can also harvest internal documents from their file systems in a wide variety of formats.
