(SIOUX
FALLS, SD) — BrightPlanet™, a provider of business solutions for
researching, monitoring and managing surface and Deep Web content, has
signed a contract with the state of South Dakota to create a searchable
database of all state-authored documents. This will allow easy access
by the citizens of the state from their own computers.
Currently,
copies of such documents are kept in paper form in seven libraries
around the state. If a citizen wants to view a document, he or she
would have to go to one of the library sites.
BrightPlanet
will create a directory that will place the documents automatically
into a database using the company’s patent-pending automation
technology. The state will give BrightPlanet the documents in
electronic form; the documents will then be placed into the database
and made easily searchable.
"This
project will draw together valuable government resources and make
access simpler and more equitable across the state,” Suzanne Miller,
State Librarian, said. “By centralizing the storage location of all
documents on a single server, the State Library will be able to prepare
the documents for use in a Web environment, insure indexing executed
according to developing national standards, secure the integrity of the
documents, and provide for archiving of these materials to insure
preservation of our state heritage."
“This
is a leap forward both in accessibility and efficiency for the state,”
Thane Paulsen, President of BrightPlanet, said. “It’s a great help to
the citizens of South Dakota because the documents are as close as the
nearest computer linked to the Internet. It’s much more efficient for
the state because there is no longer a need to have seven libraries
stocked with copies of all the current state documents.”
The
$100,000+ state contract to BrightPlanet was competitively priced.
Several out-of-state firms were contacted, but their costs for similar
services were double or triple what BrightPlanet was able to offer. The
significant cost saving is due in large part to the company’s unique
automated technology.
