(SIOUX FALLS, SD) --- It is a tragedy of no small import when $800 billion, equivalent to nearly 8% of the U.S. Gross Domestic Product, or readily available savings from creating, using, and sharing documents is wasted in the United States each year. Three-fourths of this waste is a product of re-creating work that has already been done, but lost. The subject is examined in detail in a recent White Paper published by Michael Bergman, Chief Technology Officer of BrightPlanet Corporation.
"The paper is based on earlier research that indicated the magnitude of this waste. But while the magnitude was mind-blowing, the more perplexing question was why the scope of something so huge and so amenable to corrective action was virtually invisible to policy or business attention, " elaborates Bergman. "Solving this problem can, literally, change the underlying economic structure of global business. "
"We believe that this problem extends globally, and clearly is being, at best, minimally addressed by currently implemented systems. The amazing thing is that, to us, the solution seems attainable using current technologies", said Duncan Witte, President and Chief Operating Officer of BrightPlanet. "The challenge is to 'connect the dots' by innovative integration, using already available tools and standards. BrightPlanet has a great deal to contribute in this arena, and we welcome opportunities to collaborate with other software vendors and systems integrators to develop true, cost-effective solutions "
The 22-page paper, entitled Why are $800 Billion in Document Assets Wasted Annually, is available for download in PDF format from BrightPlanet's website (www.brightplanet.com/pdf/WastedDocumentAssets.pdf). It is organized into four main sections: The 'Nature' of Information and its Ownership in the Commons; Barriers to Collaboration; The Perceived High Cost of Enterprise 'Solutions'; and The Closeness and Ubiquity of the Problem. It is thoroughly researched and footnoted, drawing on more than 50 information sources. The earlier research, Untapped Assets: The $3 Trillion Value of U.S. Enterprise Documents, is also available, at www.brightplanet.com/pdf/DocumentsValue.pdf.
